End Use Parts
KlockWerks produced custom motorcycle parts in 5 days -
reducing production time 82%
Able to manufacture a product in a critical timeframe, which was not possible without direct digital manufacturing
To win Discovery Channel's Biker Build-Off contest, Klock Werks Kustom Cycles had two weeks to build an entire custom bike and drive it to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for judging by a half-million attendees. In only five days, the Klock Werks team built several custom parts for the bike. Part requirements included high-accuracy, complex geometries, and mechanical strength for permanent installation.
ROI:
Klock Werks used direct digital manufacturing with FDM to build the custom parts. In the process they saved about $13,000. Parts cost less than a quarter the price to injection mold or cast them.
Other Benefits:
"The ability to produce [end-use] parts using direct digital manufacturing was instrumental to our success," said Klock Werks partner Todd Snedecker. "Many of the parts could not have been produced by any other means in the time-frame required." Normally it would take 3 to 4 weeks to build this type of parts, because they would require tooling.
